In March 2015 I decided to do something about my lifelong debilitating fear of heights that had prevented me from doing lots of things, including the escalators at John Lewis – I had to use the stairs! I didn’t want to live the rest of my life like this….
So I went on a two day fear of heights course, and although I was the one that struggled the most to achieve everything in those two days, I came away having done much more than I thought possible.
So, living in Rutland where there are no big hills/mountains, high bridges (well the railway bridge used to be a challenge) or tall buildings what should I do to continue to face my fears. I now believed that to overcome this I had to “do” heights on a regular basis to become accustomed to them and reduce the anxiety. The only place that came to mind was The RockBlok, and over a couple of sessions I managed to get to the top of the 30ft tower, which was absolutely thrilling, and I fist pumped for hours afterwards! I continued to build on this achievement by going back and doing things I haven’t been able to do before i.e. Scarfell Pike (three previous unsuccessful attempts) and Go Ape, as well as climbing every week.
In May 2016 I started working as an instructor at The Rockblok, and have enjoyed working here ever since. I have managed some wonderful climbs in the peak district, my highest being 50 foot. Who’d have thought it! I will be working with you on our course to enable you to achieve great things too.
None of this would have been possible without the first step, the fear of heights course, which gave me the tools and confidence to continue on what has been the most wonderful and amazing journey.
